How Mahindra Tractors Lead the way with Emission Controls
It’s no secret that agriculture and construction have contributed heavily to our increasing carbon footprint. However, in recent years, leading manufacturers have embraced new technology in order to reduce emissions and improve the industry’s impact on the environment. Mahindra tractors lead the way with emission controls, here is some information to explain how that works.
The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) instituted new standards for off-road diesel engines in an effort to reduce increasing emissions. Canada initiated the “Off-Road Compression-Ignition Engine Emission Regulations” that encompassed the US EPA Tier 2 and Tier 3 standards. In November of 2011 the regulations were amended to align with the US EPA Tier 4 standards.
As of 2011, tractor engine manufacturers must produce engines that reduce particulate matter by 90% and nitrogen oxides by 50%. Strict Tier 4 regulations are designed to reduce emissions to nearly zero, and have been in effect since 2013.
Clean air costs money, so if Mahindra tractors lead the way with emission controls, how are they able to produce a tractor that is cost-effective while also offering the highest standards of performance and efficiency?
The most common method of meeting the Tier 4 regulations is by adding a DPF (diesel particulate filter) and regeneration system. These are commonly found on on-road diesel engines as well and are designed to remove soot from the exhaust gas. As with any filter, eventually it will get clogged and need to be cleaned. A regeneration system can clean the filter by raising the temperature of the exhaust to burn the excess debris, but no matter what you do, at some point this system will need to be serviced. DPF’s are expensive and the regeneration systems even more so.
Mahindra leads the way with emission controls with their mCRD Technology, a direct result of the $30 million dollar investment in the re-design of their tractor engines. The idea was to create a simple solution that require no maintenance, offers higher performance and exceeds the Tier 4 emission standards. So how does it work?
The mCRD system uses higher injection pressure and multiple injections for a cleaner exhaust. The diesel oxidant catalyst (DOC) does not require any system regeneration, which means no filter cleaning or replacement!
